Pre-Valentine Road Trip, Brownwood, TX, Saturday, February 11, 8:30am
Our
destination for our Pre-Valentine event is Brownwood, TX. As per
the usual, we will avoid freeways and travel on country roads. Our lunch venue
will be The Turtle Restaurant, owned by fellow Fort Worth MBCA member
Mary Stanley. The Turtle is a casual fine dining restaurant in the
heart of Downtown Brownwood, and specializes in Slow Food, i.e.
everything that Fast Food is not (Slow Food is good for you, good for
local producers, sustainable, and just plain fresh and delicious).
Mary's establishment also features a gelateria and a wine bar. We
will make our selections from The Turtle's seasonal menu.
After lunch, we will visit the Lehnis Mini-Railroad Museum, a sprawling
display of model railroad layouts inside, plus rolling stock outside.
Then, we will visit the Brown County Museum of History, located inside
the old fortress-like county jail - itself recognized as a historic
landmark. Apart from the old jail, the museum contains a firearms
display and, of all things, a functioning toy circus layout. We
will also see artifacts from the history of Brown County in an annex
across the street from the old jail. We will have docent-guided
tours of both museums.
