Pack a picnic lunch and join us for a visit to Old Fort Parker, a reconstructed fort built on the site of the infamous Comanche raid which resulted in the capture of 5 pioneers, and the death of another 5. The most famous captive was 9-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker, mother of Quanah Parker, the last of the great Comanche chiefs. After a nice drive on country roads, we will have a picnic lunch (bring your own lunch) at Fort Parker State Park. We will use picnic tables located by Springfield Lake. The park sits on the site of the dead town of Springfield, abandoned in the late 1870s. We will also see the Springfield Cemetery, the only remnant of its namesake town. After lunch, we will proceed to Old Fort Parker and examine its walls, blockhouses and cabins, and to get an idea of how the pioneers lived and protected themselves against Indian raids during the 1830s.

At 9:30am, we will meet for a briefing at the Starbucks in Waxahachie (see map below). The Starbucks is located at 1198 N Highway 77, Waxahachie, (972) 837-8615, in front of the Wal-Mart, near the Hwy 77 and Hwy 287 intersection. Please arrive on time, with a full tank of gas, and be ready to go. Before we leave Waxahachie, we will take a quick look at the Ellis County Courthouse, one of J. Riely Gordon's most prominent creations. After the short courthouse visit, we will begin our drive to Fort Parker.
