A wonderful Road Trip to and from Amelia Island, with details provided by member Peter Blackford.

We leave with a caravan from Ft Myers on Thursday morning and drive to the Tampa area. After a Museum tour, we have lunch and then spend that night in Gainesville. Friday morning we get together and drive up to Amelia where we have motel rooms in Jacksonville. On Sunday, after the Show, we gather in Vilano Beach, have dinner and spend the night. Monday finds us touring the St. Augustine area and then head back down home!

For all those joining us on the "2019 Return to Amelia" (and any others interested), here are the final details: 3/7 (Thursday) Gather at I-75 exit 141 - Cracker Barrel - for breakfast, and prepare for departure at 9:00 AM sharp. Maps/directions will be provided to all. IMPORTANT: please confirm participation via email to [email protected] NOW so we can have the right number of maps printed, as well as gather the final list for Friday dinner, etc.. We will proceed north via I-75, I-275 (TOLL for the bridge - bring your speed pass) to arrive at Tampa Bay Auto Museum prior to 11 AM, when our tour will begin (it's a 117 mile run - no stops anticipated). We will be greeted by the owner of the collection (who will then depart with his family, as they always show cars at Amelia on Sunday), and enjoy cars within the theme of "Cars of the '30s and Front Wheel Drive". Yes, there are a couple of Mercedes there, and also the oldest designed self-propelled vehicle! After our tour, we will proceed a short distance to lunch at BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse (they brew good rootbeer too) for lunch. Sandy & I have eaten there, and they offer a nicely varied menu which should satisfy all. From lunch, we will drive another two hours north to our evening accommodations at the Hilton Garden Inn, Gainsville. Hopefully, you have your room reserved under our block - if not, please contact me soon! On Friday morning we will depart (with directions in hand) "on our own" since some may want to arrive early to preview auctions, others may make a more leisurely drive and go directly to the DoubleTree Jacksonville Airport hotel. The cutoff date for our block & special rate is February 22. Please advise if you have made a reservation, so I can review the full list with the hotel to be certain everyone is getting the best rate - i.e., we need a final 'rooming list'! Our SWFL MBCA dinner will be at the DoubleTree (order off the menu), at 6:30 PM to give a little time for those who went up to the island to return. Saturday morning, those participating in the "Cars & Coffee" show will leave early (don't forget your field pass!), and the rest will travel a bit later to enjoy the free casual concours. Parking (unless you have a special arrangement) is best done at the Amelia Island Airport where shuttle buses will take you to the gate - and the same on Sunday. Also on Friday/Saturday, all should pick up their Sunday tickets at Will-Call in the Ritz (which you should have purchased online at ). Just the basic Sunday ticket is all you will need. Sunday, pack your bags and check out of the DoubleTree & drive up to the Island once again for one of the top Concours events in the world. Due to parking and individual preference, we will not attempt to drive in a group to or following the Sunday concours; but when you have seen it all, proceed down the coast (using the Mayport ferry if you wish, or the longer/faster highway) to the Hampton Inn Vilano Beach. There, we will gather for a short drive or walk to dinner. Monday, some plan to tour historic St. Augustine, others will proceed back to SWFL at their own pace. No special activities that day, just enjoy the drive!

Any questions, please email me ( [email protected] ).
